FORT MYERS, FL (October 12, 2017) – In honor of National Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 8-14), the Fort Myers Fire Department is continuing its Safety Saturday campaign. Each Saturday this month, fire officers are visiting a different community to identify fire safety hazards and install smoke alarms in homes that do not have working alarms. This Oct. 14, Firefighters will visit homes in the neighborhood bordered by Edison Ave. and Canal St. on the north and south, between Highland Ave. and Ford St.
The Department kicked off its “Safety Saturday” campaign on Oct. 7 by visiting 120 homes in the Brookhill neighborhood and installing 82 smoke alarms in homes that had no working alarms.
Later this month, FMFD will visit two more neighborhoods. On Oct. 21, FMFD will visit residents south of Palm Beach Boulevard, between Terry Park and Alderman St. and south to Marion St. On Oct. 28, the department will canvas the west side of the Jefferson Park neighborhood, between Princeton St. and McKinley Ave.
Safety Saturday canvassing events will begin at 9:00 a.m. and continue for approximately three hours.
Residents are encouraged to contact the Fort Myers Fire Department at 239-321-7353 to sign up for a visit from the Fire Department and take part in the campaign.
“Smoke alarms provide lifesaving seconds in case of a structure fire.” explains Chief John Caufield. “Our Safety Saturday events are helping to remind folks of the importance of fire safety and of having a working smoke detector.”
In the 31 months between January 2015 and July 2017, the City of Fort Myers experienced 150 residential fires. Only 36% of those homes had working smoke detectors installed. Nationwide, nearly two-thirds of all home fire deaths occur in properties without working smoke alarms. Having a functioning smoke alarm in your home cuts your risk of dying in a home fire in half.
